Pictured above is a Colt M1911, a single-action, semi-automatic pistol, designed by John Browning. Six designs were submitted to the U.S. armed forces in 1906 to replace revolvers, including submissions by Colt, Bergmann, Deutsche Wafen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), Savage Arms Company, Knoble, Webley, and White-Merril. Two—Colt and Savage—made it to the final field tests. In a 6,000 round test at the end of 1910, the Colt performed perfectly with no malfunctions, while the Savage had 37. The army adopted the pistol in 1911, followed by the Navy and the Marine Corps in 1913. One of the requirements of the design was .45 caliber for stopping power, after the .38 Long Colt was found unsuitable in fighting Moro guerrillas during the Philippne-American War. This pistol was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
